No real campaign layer, but more realistic turn-based versions of the Total War battles. If you like Total War battles, I can recommend Pike&Shot/Sengoku Jidai/Field of Glory 2. Eu4 intrigues me still but I prefer real war games these days. Hoi3 was good if not a little convoluted.įinally I like the strategic options in many paradox games but have come to find them quite shallow once you learn the systems. I used to play italy in hoi4 all the time before I realized how shallow hoi really was. If a game is best played as say the americans in Normandy I'll get bored. So win the battle of waterloo, take paris as Germany in 1914 or later. Try to do what the real people couldn't do. That leads to my favorite thing in historical games. I'd love a realistic shot at the pacific war ww2 as japan. Games like company of heroes can be fun but not what I want now. not overwhelming but maybe too micromanagement intensive although I'm not against micromanagement. I played war in the west and did like it although it was a bit. That said I love all military history and wouldn't rule out a good game over setting. The Napoleonic era is next with American civil war and revolutionary wars filling out my list. I mostly play France 14 because ww1 is my go to time period. I've tried to graduate to more complex wargaming. So I played thousands of hours of total war games over the past 15 years.
